Happy.

This is how I feel today! We were sort of rushing at the end of the day, and we didn't get to talk about a sticker day, but YES! It was a sticker day! What a great week you've had! Here I am, feeling all lousy and sick, and I have a class that knows how to hold it together and make my life easier, and my days brighter. Thanks! Remind me to give you a sticker tomorrow morning.

I can't wait to see your "Fountain of Youth" brochures! I hope you have convinced all of Ponce de Leon's sailors to go to Florida (home of the flowers) and find your magical water. Although, I don't know if I'd like to live forever...unless I could somehow find an unlimited supply of money and could spend eternity traveling and scuba diving. THEN it might be worth it! What do you all think? Would you want to live forever?

Okay, onto mundane topics: homework. Tonight's homework is:
1. Read & Journal (or work on your book report)
2. Review math ideas for tomorrow's test (I will be in at 7:45 to answer last minute questions.)
3. Ponce de Leon brochure (bring your social studies folder back to school!!!!)
4. Field trip $ and slip due tomorrow
5. Bring auction items if it is your day
6. bring in materials for science project. We will have class time to work on them.

See you tomorrow!
:) Your happy teacher

Testing, 1, 2, 3

So many tests today!

You all did a great job putting your thinking caps on today! I am looking forward to reading your Dear Mr. Henshaw tests. It seems like many of you really knew what you were talking about!

Then! As if an hour of quiet wasn't enough! I made you do your writing prompt in during writing time! Ugh! This should be an example of your best writing and will go in your cumulative folder at the end of the year.

We also started book clubs today. I haven't had a chance to check in with the other guided reading teachers yet, but I know that I enjoyed meeting the new students in my group! Oh, and of course I am psyched to have some of my homeroom kids, too. ;) Except that neighbor of mine....boy, does he talk a lot...

Just kidding. My neighbor rocks.

Homework tonight is:
1. Read & Journal
2. Get your math test (Unit 2) signed
3. Book orders due Friday

Tomorrow is already Wednesday! Yaaa Hooooooo!

Hello, from John Cabot

Greetings!

We have been learning about explorers, and this week we focused on John Cabot. Did you know that his real name was not John Cabot? Kids, tell your parents what you learned about his original name. I've posted a picture of his route to help you remember where he traveled.

Homework for the weekend is:
1. Study vocabulary words for Tuesday's test!
2. READ. READ. READ.

Good job with angles today! You all did even better than I was expecting! Have a fantastic long weekend, and I will see you Tuesday morning!
:) Ms. Medler

So close...yet so far.

Well, it was ALMOST a sticker day! Yesterday was wonderful, and today was 90% wonderful. I think the probability of tomorrow being a sticker day is 92%. What do you all think?

Families, today we took our Unit 2 math test. I am looking forward to going over them to see how much everyone has learned! The class received their social studies quizzes back today and part of their homework is to show an adult family member and get it signed. If it is not turned in tomorrow, it is a homework fine!

Along the lines of tests, just a reminder that this Friday we will have our final vocabulary test for the book Dear Mr. Henshaw, and on Tuesday, we will have the Dear Mr. Henshaw final exam. We will be reviewing in small groups on Friday. Next Tuesday we will begin book clubs, which means that the 5th grade will be integrated and divided into smaller book groups. The teachers are, (along with me!) Ms. Hayes, Ms. Piz, Mrs. Moses, and Mrs. Herzlinger. Those of you who came to Back-to-School Night had the chance to meet Mrs. Herzlinger. She has been working with our class this week to get to know the kids.

Today we also started our first major writing assignment for the year. Everyone has been researching the presidential candidates and now the kids have been asked to select who they would choose for president and write a 5 paragraph essay defending their choice. You can help your children by sharing newspaper articles, magazine articles, and simply by asking questions. A little political conversation to get their minds ticking! Tonight is the 3rd Presidential Debate. It's a little late for 5th graders (9:00pm) but if they can watch even part of it, that would be fantastic!

Enjoy the sunshine, everyone!
:) Ms. Medler

Welcome, Roger & Company!

I just arrived home from the parade! You guys looked great! I hope you all enjoyed it. I am pretty sure my dogs will have nightmares for weeks because of the experience. They are generally afraid of most people, so a loud parade full of people wanting to touch them was not their idea of fun. They are sleeping peacefully on the couch now. :) I think they'll be okay.

Here is a picture of Roger, one of our fish! We voted on names for the other three fish, and the winning names were: Kolo, Tom Brady, and Curtis. I promised the girls that we could get one more fish and let it be a girl fish. :)

The reading response for tonight is not due until Monday. This is the only weekend homework that you will have. You can do the reading response today, tomorrow, or over the weekend. Just remember to bring it Monday!

Amanda, don't forget to feed the fish tomorrow. Noah, I left gecko food on the purple table. Oh, and can someone remind the botanist to water the plants? I hope you have a good day. I'll miss you guys! I will be grading your social studies tests as I endure a 5 hour car ride to Long Island. (Don't worry-- I'm not the driver. I know the rule: "Don't Drive and Correct") Write some comments and tell me how the day goes tomorrow! But don't leave a bunch of goofy comments!

Have a good weekend!
:) Ms. Medler
